From Train to Tavern

#Prompt 154
1

No one moves from friends to lovers without losing a few things along the way, but theirs was a little much, you could fill a small vault with their carnage. All of it just to be together. Was it worth it? That part, they never said aloud. The sacrifices they made stood as the indomitable elephant in the room. It had breakfast with them, sat in on movie nights, and when they sought each other’s bodies for comfort, it stood there, ticking off the orgasms they faked between them.

“I love you”

“I love you, too”

They said it more often these days, to fill the gaps of things they would rather not say.

Words like “This isn’t working” meant all of it was for nothing. The miles they covered from train to tavern were meaningless miles to nowhere. The hurt they left behind because there was “something” between them… That one was vapor now.

If they said the truth, if they gave it room to breathe, they’d have to admit this was just an itch they turned into a virus, and let it consume them. Even more honestly, they were cured now.

Both parties pursed their lips and instead smiled, their eyes betraying.
