I have learnt that there are no footprints after you leave
No echo of footfalls left behind to remind me
What an escape sounds like
If only to trace them after you
To find the life you seek and ask
why it has to be away from me
why you are spoiled for choice when I have none
I picture the evening you drove away with a wave
but all I know about waves is you can drown in them
So I keep my arms still
Become my own life raft
They say the first thing you learn about the sea is surrender
So I allow myself the grace to stay afloat
And be carried into the distance
Away from the fading echo of your voice
And all the memories they keep calling me back
