I’m going to lie like a rug
when you chase serendipity
instead of choosing us
I’m going to say
“It’s okay”
“I’m fine”
“I understand”
and all other assurances that allow you
Place one foot in front of the other
Until you’re an ocean away from the threat of my hugs
and other desires you haven’t allowed escape my lips.
I’m going to lie and not give anything away.
I won’t tell you my knees are weak
and prepped for submission or
how I now know what butterflies are
Because the way you say my name gives those caterpillars wings
and I, a willing host,
swallowed to keep them down,
so in some way, you never escape me
even if you're walking away now
