Calm and Steady

#Prompt 96

Work leave was over. It was back to the debilitating boredom that was his job. It was so boring his Boss once dozed off mid-sentence. This wasn’t always the plan but plans change when you have a debt-shaped hole in your pocket, all your hard work slips through. This is what happens when you marry a person you didn’t really know and you hope that love will take care of everything. Well, it did. Everything is now gone even your favourite spoon. His darling wife sold whatever she could find and she kept coming back. It didn’t matter that he changed the locks, she broke in. Hired security? She bribed them. Half the time he’s replacing stolen items, the other half he spends buying things she can steal. One day he came back and she had gotten in again, prepared a meal, and set the place mats, and candles for dinner. That day, he looked at her properly for the first time in months. Her cheeks had sunken in, there was a gash on her forehead- untreated. Her hair was hidden under the scarf he gave her for Mother’s Day. He did not want to go there. He even recognised the clothes she wore, they looked the worst they had ever been. Losing their little boy had set these things in motion. She was never mentally the same, neither was he. So he had never called the police or had her committed. He had her committed that day. He wanted her to be around for longer, much longer, even if all she could do was loom around like a shadow.
