The music doesn’t stop.
We spin the record from the ending
the chorus
the bridge
until we are back on the first note
I’m not one for singing but
I will hold that note like a long breath
as it burns, as it falters
Exhale all my fears
into a tempo you can dance to
hold it long enough to hear what I missed
and I will watch every step
curling sound to your movement
each sway an extension of harmony
this time I don’t skip the hard parts
we are telling a new story in loop
In that story I sing
always in step, never in tune
swallowing the notes that escape from habit
Like a broken record still whistling it’s final tunes
I ferry you across the floor
to an ovation
because we did it
not right
just together
but only in an alternative ending
